Student Success at BMT
At Brooklyn Math Tutors, we celebrate students who turn challenges into triumphs. Success isn’t just about top grades or test scores—it’s about mastering a new concept, building confidence, or finding joy in problem-solving. Our tutors provide personalized support to help each student grow, fostering skills and self-belief that last beyond the classroom. Read below for inspiring stories of our students’ progress and transformation.

“Miller”
Unmotivated Freshman Finds Confidence for Math Success
Miller started tutoring with us the 8th grade, struggling with math and physics due to ADHD and a nonchalant attitude toward school. He put in minimal effort outside class, avoided asking questions, and felt progress was out of reach, often failing quizzes. His tutor, familiar with his family, connected with him through his love for soccer and basketball to build rapport.
In ninth grade, Miller’s mindset began to shift. His tutor encouraged him to ask questions and view mistakes as steps toward progress, sparking small moments of empowerment. By learning to pose his own questions—like “How might I solve this?”—Miller tackled problems with growing confidence. He came to sessions prepared, ready to dive into math or physics.
His grades improved from Cs and Fs to mostly Bs and As, including his first A on a math quiz after independent study.
We are most proud of Miller for:
His newfound confidence in problem-solving. From an unmotivated freshman, he became a student who embraced challenges and learned to trust his ability to find solutions.
“Koko”
Reluctant Math Enthusiast Earns Brooklyn Tech Admission
Koko started working with us in the sixth grade. School didn’t challenge her, so her tutor initially focused on enrichment tied to sixth-grade topics. Koko enjoyed the sessions, but didn’t take them seriously at first.
Everything changed in 7th grade when she overheard her advanced classmates discussing the SHSAT and elite schools like Brooklyn Tech. She had to get in!
With a clear focus on the SHSAT, her approach transformed. She tackled her tutor’s assignment with diligence, and began tracking her scores closely, asking about progress and cutoff targets.
Koko took charge of her prep schedule, completed practice tests twice, and even led study sessions with friends, sharing strategies.
Her scores climbed from 50-60% to 85% on verbal and 95% on math, and by November, her 575 SHSAT score secured her spot at Brooklyn Tech.
We are most proud of Koko for:
Her remarkable growth in maturity and self-directedness. From an unmotivated sixth-grader, she evolved into a focused student who owned her SHSAT journey and achieved her Brooklyn Tech goal.

“Sabine”
Struggling 6th Grader Masters Math Foundations for Middle School Success
Sabine started tutoring with us in 6th grade, grappling with basic math skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. She relied on her fingers for simple sums like 15 plus 4 and struggled to recall times tables, making fractions and decimals a steep climb. Her tutor focused on building a strong foundation, using flashcards for mental multiplication and memory tricks for adding numbers like 9.
In seventh grade, Sabine’s enthusiasm and hard work stood out. She practiced diligently, even on tough days, building confidence in mental math. This allowed her to tackle classwork faster and with ease. She enjoyed ending sessions with math games, from graphing challenges to multiplication contests, which deepened her love for learning.
Her grades soared from below expectations to nearly all “exceeds” on exams, including a recent test with top marks.
We are most proud of Sabine for:
Her persistent effort and positive mindset. From a struggling sixth-grader, she became a confident student who found joy in math and built a solid foundation for future success.
“Gabriella”
Struggling Algebra Student Passes Regents Retake
Gabriela started tutoring with us in tenth grade, having failed the Algebra 2 Regents. She lacked core concepts like trigonometry and polynomial factoring, some untaught by her school, others forgotten. Eager to pass but unsure how, she faced significant knowledge gaps. Her tutor began by reviewing a Regents exam to identify her strengths and weaknesses.
In eleventh grade, Gabriela’s enthusiasm drove her progress. Through detailed explanations and repetitive practice, she mastered concepts like polynomial long division. A breakthrough came when she tackled a factoring problem and exclaimed, “I actually know how to do this!”
She learned to apply the same effort she put into her volleyball practice (her team went to the championships), and with a few months of focused effort, Gabriella passed the Regents retake with a 79, a huge leap from her initial score.
We are most proud of Gabriella for:
Her excitement in mastering new concepts. From a struggling tenth-grader, she became an enthusiastic learner who embraced challenges and gained confidence to pass the Regents.
